The City is seeking a responsible person who has outstanding inter-personal skills, exceptional attention to detail, a “can-do” disposition, ability to positively project and interact with youth, and who is willing go the extra mile to provide exceptional service to the public.  Employees will work app. 27 hours per week, from 9 am/11 am to 6 pm/8 pm.


JOB CHARACTERISTICSUnder close supervision, performs entry-level library work.  Although library procedures are well-established and duties are performed under supervision, work must be done with some independence once experience is gained.


EXAMPLES OF MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED - Computer, copy machine, printer, video gaming equipment, projector, sound system, TTY phone, general office equipment



·         Assists the Youth Services Librarian with preparing for and conducting youth programming and day-to-day activities;

·         Greets and assists patrons in the youth services area;

·         Sets up and takes down materials and equipment needed for programs;

·         Distributes various youth event handouts within the library;

·         Performs limited clerical duties including typing, filing, record keeping, etc.;

·         Maintains order, discipline and safety in assigned areas;

·         Answers telephones, screens calls and takes messages as necessary;

·         Performs other related duties as required.



·         Assists the City in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster; other related duties as required.



Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Ability to work well with others and assist the public cooperatively and courteously; ability to learn the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of a public library; ability to pay attention to detail; ability to carry out assignments with minimum instructions; ability to properly maintain system records; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked.  


Physical Demands - Work involves balanced combination of mobile and sedentary duties with sustained periods of flexibility needed for alternate standing/sitting (during story times/events) and other physical activity.  Requires bending, reaching, moderate lifting, good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination, and good eyesight, hearing, and speech.



Salary Range – $10.99 - $15.99/hr; Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration.  Applicants should expect a starting rate of $10.99/hr.  Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience.  Final candidates will be subject to skills testing, including spelling, grammar, customer service, and typing (minimum 35 CWPM).  Final candidates may be required to pass a drug test and are offered a conditional offer of employment contingent upon satisfactory results of a thorough criminal history background check.

Minimum Qualifications - High School Diploma or recognized equivalent and a demonstrated ability to read and write English. Knowledge of business English, spelling and mathematics, basic computer literacy.  Skill to type at least 35 CWPM.  Proven ability to meet the physical demands of youth activity programming requirements.
