Job Summary

Performs copy cataloging of monographs with standardized member-input bibliographic records; searches in the merged database (currently Aleph, Sierra as of July 2018) of the State University Libraries (SUL), or in the OCLC database; proof-reads, checks classification numbers and controlled vocabulary, and edits bibliographic records in conformance with international, national and state standards.  As time permits, performs advanced copy cataloging of monographs with substandard member-input bibliographic records.

  • Performs advanced copy cataloging of monographs in all collections, including Spanish language materials. Researches the title in OCLC; checks the bibliographic description for completeness and accuracy (using the latest version of the cataloging rules and the latest version of the Library of Congress (LC) policies on the cataloging rules, local policies, MARC format, and ISBD punctuation).
  • Searches all access points in the LC Authority File and corrects as necessary. Checks scope notes in the authority file for correct application of subject headings and free-floating subject subdivisions. Creates all linked records necessary for complete user displays using pertinent local and national standards, such as the Holdings Record and the Item Record. Checks all series headings in the authority file (OCLC and local); makes corrections when necessary; passes unestablished series headings to the Principal Monographic Cataloger for the creation of an original authority record as needed. 
  • Performs Batch loading of Bibliographic records for print monographs using the ALEPH Integrated Library Management Systems Advanced Vendor Records Loader. This duty includes the manipulation and compiling of metadata using the MarcEdit software and file sorting and additional loading using the GenLoad software.
  • Performs Batch loading of Bibliographic records for electronic monographs using the ALEPH Integrated Library Management System's Advanced Vendor Records Loader. This This duty includes the manipulation and compiling of metada using the MarcEdit software, and verifying that the Proxy Server prefix is added to all the hyperlinks and that those hyperlinks are correct and active.
  • Works with the Principal Monographic Cataloger in performing advanced "3rd level" copy cataloging of certain types of monographs (for example, literary works and new editions). In addition to the procedures outlined in the first bullet above, formulates a call number based on the LC classification schedules and local practice. Checks, corrects, and enhances the subject headings or assigns appropriate subject headings when the record does not include them to facilitate the user's access and retrieval of records
  • Keeps informed of changes in workstation functionality, cataloging rules/LC policies, standards for data communication and display, LC subject headings and LC class schedules.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Education:

High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
