Description:

 

This position performs professional library work directing a variety of library functions. Work involves managing a specialty department in library administration or managing one of the community libraries in the County Library System. Work involves continuous public contact requiring the exercise of considerable patience, tact, and diplomacy, and the exercise of independent judgment and initiative in scheduling, assigning, and coordinating work with that of other units within the system.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Participates in the selection, placement, promotion, training, development, scheduling, discipline, safety, and appraisal of professional, paraprofessional and volunteer personnel in the methods, practices, and techniques used in library systems and/or area of specialty as assigned.
  • Assists the Regional Librarian or Division Manager in carrying out administrative and supervisory tasks;.

  • Selects books for inclusion in collections; manages budget.

  • Ensures all tasks have been completed in a timely manner prior to the library opening and closing.

  • Purchases supplies and materials for programs. 

  • Provides troubleshooting and technical support for software and library equipment such as projectors and public computers.

  • Develops a variety of special activities to stimulate readership interest; responds to issues involving the public as appropriate.

  • Supervises reference service in the library.

  • May Work with Friends of the Library on issues of common interest.

  • Performs original and complex cataloging of library materials; oversees maintenance of library’s bibliographic database.

  • Oversees materials acquisition process including dealing with vendors and salespersons; recommends the acquisition of books, documents, audio/visuals, and other material.

  • Represents the library at various meetings, civic events, and on assigned committees and governing boards; attends meetings and participates in planning activities; performs related speaking engagements and public relations activities.

  • Writes newspaper columns, prepares grants, and develops general correspondence.

  • Implements library system policies and procedures; prepares reports and maintains records.

  • Attends training events/conferences; travels to various County library facilities.

  • Provides customer service to library patrons. 

 


Education:

 

Minimum Education and Experience: Advanced Degree in Library Science and at least three (3) years of relevant progressive and supervisory experience in a library setting; or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.  Prefer master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited program.
