GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

 

 

Para-professional library work which involves performing various technical library services and may include lead work responsibilities.  Works under the general supervision of the Support Services Librarian.

 

 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Directs the operation of the circulation desk according to established procedures.

 

  1. Assigns and monitors clerical tasks and work flow at the circulation desk.

 

  1. Provides circulation services to the public.

 

  1. Assists professional Librarians in providing services.

 

  1. Assists in development of policies and procedures.

 

  1. Maintains orderly flow of materials.

 

  1. Provides general information about the library and its services and refers patrons to appropriate personnel for assistance.

 

  1. Maintains reports and statistics of operating unit.

 

  1. Instructs and trains volunteers and staff.

 

  1. Assists in selection of some library materials.

 

  1. Sets priorities.

 

  1. Represents Library at area special interest groups.

  2. Is responsible for managing patron holds and processing all Interlibrary loans.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

     

 

  1. Knowledge of the services and operations of the library system.

  2. Knowledge of Interlibrary loan procedures and the OCLC WorldCat system.

 

  1. Knowledge of standard library clerical methods and practices.

 

  1. Knowledge of library policies and procedures.

 

  1. Ability to communicate with supervisors and coworkers.

 

  1. Ability to interpret circulation policies and procedures to the public.

 

  1. Ability to interact effectively with library patrons over the telephone and in person.

 

  1. Ability to communicate clearly.

 

  1. Ability to utilize business mathematics and business English.

 

  1. Ability to understand complex oral and written instructions.

 

  1. Ability to work without close supervision.

 

  1. Ability to make decisions within the framework of stated policies and procedures.

 

  1. Ability to use judgment in performing library duties.

 

  1. Ability to deal with complex tasks.

 

  1. Ability to function as a lead worker over Library Assistants, Clerks, and volunteers.

 

  1. Ability to operate a PC in a network environment.

 

 

 

Education and Experience

 

 

 

  1. High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

 

  1. Three (3) years experience in responsible clerical work including experience in a library.

 

 

 

(A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

 

 

 

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

 

 

 

  1. None.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

 

 

 

  1. Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).

 

  1. Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).

 

  1. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

 

  1. Moderate (15-44 pounds) lifting and carrying.

 

  1. Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level.

 

  1. Ability to push/pull loaded book truck up to 75 lbs.

  2. Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a network PC.

  3. Ability to sit at a desk and view a display screen for extended periods of time.

  1. Works inside in an office environment.
