JOB SUMMARY

The Regional Government Documents Librarian (Documents Librarian) is a 12 month, tenure track faculty position in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library (Library West). The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida is designated as a depository for the publications of the United States Government, the State of Florida, and the European Union. The scope of the collections thus includes federal, state, and international documents.

Joining the George A. Smathers Libraries as the Documents Librarian entails serving as the primary liaison to the US Government Publishing Office (GPO) in matters relating to the Libraries’ service as a Regional Federal Depository Library for 38 selective depository libraries in the state of Florida, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. This position leads statewide outreach, training, public access, support services, and collection development activities to support the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The Documents Librarian also plays an important role ensuring access to state publications distributed by the Florida Division of Library and Information Services. Both programs allow the incumbent to build strong partnerships with a diverse constituency at the state, regional and national levels while advancing innovative programs to strengthen awareness of the increasing relevancy of government documents in current research and public interest.

The Smathers Libraries is an active member of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP), and participates in the Centers of Excellence (COEs) project by collecting, cataloging and digitizing the holdings of over 30 agencies. An early participant in the GPO Preservation Steward program, the Smathers Libraries has taken an active stand in efforts to promote and protect print and digital access to government documents, including an active commitment to catalogue all federal documents in the UF collections to ensure access to this important historical content. The Smathers Libraries is unique in having a “Last Copy” policy ensuring that all academic libraries in Florida and all selective depository libraries in the region can deposit federal government documents for permanent retention.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the Regional Depository Librarian for the FDLP, and provide outreach and leadership to the 38 selective Federal Depository Libraries in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Coordinate with the GPO and Selectives to improve collections and services, promote and protect access to government documents, and assist with training and implementation within the region.

  • Continue to build comprehensive print and digital sets of the publications of the agencies and subjects in the Smathers Libraries’ ASERL Center of Excellence (COE) collections and recommend the selection of additional COE agencies.

  • Lead and develop library participation as a preservation steward by managing communications, reporting, and collection management activities as designated in the Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the GPO.
  • Build and manage tangible and virtual state, federal and international documents collections to meet the needs of the University of Florida community and other constituents.

  • Participate in the evaluation and selection of digital resources related to government information with other selectors in the Smathers Libraries and the Legal Information Center.

  • Develop innovative and collaborative projects around government information access and use.

  • Collaborate with the Smathers Libraries’ unit established to catalog the entire Federal Documents collection.

  • Provide general and specialized research assistance at the Library West service desks, online via email, texting and chat, and telephone. Participate in Library West general instruction and outreach programs, as well as providing government documents specific instruction.

  • Participate in planning, policy formation and departmental decision making related to Library West services, collections and new technologies.

  • Perform scholarly research and provide service at the institutional and professional levels as related to assignments and in accordance with the University Libraries’ tenure and promotion criteria.

 

 


Education:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or advanced degree in relevant subject specialty
  • Experience working with the Federal Depository Library Program and government documents
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills
  • Experience teaching and/or training adult learners
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and institutional priorities
  • Knowledge of current trends in academic and scholarly resource management, including digital projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, administrators and the general public

  • For appointment at the Assistant University Librarian rank, two years of relevant post graduate degree experience.  For appointment at the Associate University Librarian rank, eight years of relevant post graduate degree experience 

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a Federal Depository Library
  • Experience in collection management, reference and instruction in an academic or research library
  • Experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other units across campus communities
  • Knowledge of bibliographic control policies and standards for government publications
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing digital library projects
  • Experience in the design and integration of new technologies into information services
  • Experience working with GPO cataloging/metadata standards

  • Record of including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, and perspectives in research, teaching, service and other work
