THE HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER LIBRARIES The Health Science Center Libraries provide services and programs to support the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Professions, and Veterinary Medicine; the McKnight Brain Institute; the University of Florida Genetics Institute; the Emerging Pathogens Institute; the Institute for Child and Health Policy; and the Institute of Aging; Shands HealthCare; the University of Florida/Shands Cancer Center; the University of Florida Physicians Clinics (12 primary and 21 specialty care); and the North Florida AHEC program. Smathers Libraries seeks a creative and service-oriented reference and instruction librarian for the health sciences. This is a multi-year non-tenure accruing faculty appointment. The Reference/Liaison Librarian provides reference assistance, instruction, outreach, and collection management for assigned colleges, departments or programs in the Health Science Center. This position serves as a member of the Health Science Center Library Reference, Education, and Information Management team, and provides reference services in a variety of modes (in person, email, “house calls”). This position is responsible for special projects as assigned, such as collection reviews, development of web-based resources, and service evaluation. George A. Smathers Libraries encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions and, consequently, the Reference/Liaison Librarian will be asked to serve on various committees and teams. The Reference/Liaison Librarian performs scholarly research and provides service at the institutional and professional levels as related to assignment. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides liaison librarian services to assigned colleges, departments or programs in the Health Science Center. Liaison services include instruction, consultation, collection development, and other client-centered services as identified. 2. Provides on-call, by appointment, and e-mail reference services to faculty, students and staff of the University of Florida Health Science Center. 3. Participates in instruction programs using traditional classroom methods and educational technologies. 4. Participates actively in the development, selection and evaluation of web resources for subject guides and other client services. 5. Participates in collection management program. Selects and evaluates subject based materials related to liaison assignment and works with faculty in selecting materials to support their academic and research programs. 6. Participates in planning, policy formation and departmental decision making relating to health science services, collections and new technologies. 7. Creates and maintains an image database for use in HSCL instruction. 8. Performs scholarly research and provides service at the institutional and professional levels as related to assignment.
Education / Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS: Required: 1. Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school, or equivalent advanced degree in a life or health science field. 2. Strong commitment to client-focused service. 3. Understanding of and enthusiasm for reference resources and services. 4. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for the integration of new technologies into the delivery of information services. 5. Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a culturally diverse client community. 6. Ability to work effectively with all levels of library client – faculty, researchers, clinicians, students (professional, graduate and undergraduate), and staff. 7. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 8. Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and work creatively in a rapidly changing environment. 9. Interest in contributing to the profession via research, publication, presentation, and service. Preferred: 1. Undergraduate or advanced degree in health or life science, or experience serving a similar client population. 2. Experience working in an academic health science library. 3. Experience with/demonstrated enthusiasm for working with the public. 4. Experience with/demonstrated enthusiasm for instruction. 5. Familiarity with web-based instructional tools. 6. Familiarity with online reference services. 7. Proficiency in the design and creation of web pages.
