Broad Functions:

The Reference and Instructional Librarian assist faculty and students in locating needed information via the library catalog and library databases, provide personalized database instruction in the classroom, conduct workshops and other activities in order to promote library services, provide basic technological support to copiers, printers, scanners, and computers in the library. 

 Primary Tasks 


  1. Provides reference and research assistance to students and faculty including; on-line database searches, interlibrary loan services, library instruction.
  2. Provides library workshops and additional library instruction to faculty, staff, and students. Library workshops are conducted as a lecture during a teacher’s class. The workshop includes a review of the library website, virtual library, databases, library catalog, and research tips.
  3. Orients new students to library services and collections.
  4. Creates and performs video tutorials on research help and contributes material to library’s website.
  5. Receives and processes interlibrary loan requests from library patrons. Keeps the interlibrary loan files up to date and orders material from other libraries. Processes other library requests for our library materials.
  6. Check in journal, magazine, and newspaper issues as they are received in the library and then shelve all materials before the end of the day.
  7. Processes periodicals, perform claims on missing orders, data entry of serials into our library catalog.
  8. Assists students, faculty, and staff with research help and answers reference questions in person, by phone, email, or chat.
  9. Assists users in the location of books, audios, videos, tests and test protocols, journals and other library materials.
  10. Maintains and updates each semester course reserve collection by contacting faculty to ensure material being held in the library for their students is still applicable and adding new material as needed.
  11.  Assists at circulation desk
  12. Performs any additional duties assigned to him/her by the Library Director/Library Manager.

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program completed or nearing completion
  • 1+ years working in a library setting, preferably an academic library
  • Experience providing library workshops and library instruction
  • Outstanding customer service skills 
  • Experience using a variety of research databases and print resources
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress classification system
  • Strong technology skills, including Microsoft Office products, Outlook email, Windows, copiers, scanners, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and on a rotating schedule as necessary
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish (preferred)
