The Education Librarian is a full-time, year-round (12-month), tenure track faculty position in the Education Library, serving the College of Education (COE) and related disciplines at the University of Florida. Working with the Head of the Education Library, this position contributes to the development, coordination, and provision of library programs and services, including a wide range of public, technical, and collection management functions. The Education Librarian will provide reference services both in-person and via phone, email, and online chat. The Education Librarian will deliver research instruction and develop instructional resources primarily targeted to students and faculty in the COE. The Education Librarian will serve as liaison to assigned departments and programs within the COE, and will communicate with faculty, develop collections, and offer innovative services to support their needs.  

The library encourages faculty participation in reaching management decisions and consequently the Education Librarian will serve on various committees and teams. To support all students and faculty and foster excellence in a diverse and global society, the Education Librarian will be expected to include individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, abilities, and perspectives in work activities and decision making. All faculty at the George A. Smathers Libraries are expected to pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional service activities in order to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.





  • Works with the Head of the Education Library to define goals; establish objectives and priorities; and develop, implement, and evaluate plans, policies, and procedures that support the library’s services and programs.

  • Manages the Education Library in the absence of the Head of the Education Library.

  • Keeps informed of the development of academic and research needs, and communicates with patrons about relevant library issues.

  • Provides reference and instructional services.

  • Develops instructional materials, in a variety of formats, to enhance effective understanding and use of collections and services.

  • Leverages new technologies to enhance library services.

  • Provides management for collections to support assigned departments and programs. Manages budgets, selects materials in appropriate formats, collaborates with other subject specialists in related disciplines, and provides analysis and reports as required.

  • In accordance with tenure and promotion criteria, contributes to the library, university, and the profession through substantive involvement in such activities as committee work, research, publishing, and participation in professional organizations.




  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited or equivalent library school.

  • Familiarity with the scholarly literature of education.

  • Experience with and/or demonstrated enthusiasm for in-person and online instruction.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong presentation skills.

  • Flexible and innovative approach to challenges and opportunities.

  • Excellent analytical and organization skills.

  • Competence with information technologies and demonstrated effectiveness in integrating technology with traditional services.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team within a culturally diverse user community.

  • Strong potential for meeting the requirements of tenure and promotion (outlined at



  • Relevant experience and/or expertise in the field of Education.

  • Degree in Education or Social Sciences.

  • Academic library experience.

  • Experience with and/or demonstrated enthusiasm for children’s and/or young adult literature.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Professional experience using social media.

  • Record of including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientation, and perspectives in research, teaching, service and other work.
