Cataloging and Metadata Assistant (Library Technician III)

Ringling College of Art and Design seeks an enthusiastic and creative Cataloging and Metadata Assistant (Library Technician III) at the Alfred R. Goldstein Library. The Cataloging and Metadata Assistant will work closely with the Technical Services Librarian and the Serials and Interlibrary Loan Assistant to support the description and discovery of print and electronic collections at the Goldstein Library.

The Cataloging and Metadata Assistant is primarily responsible for copy cataloging, as well as assisting in original cataloging and metadata creation activities to ensure the discoverability of physical and digital materials in the library's collection. The person in this position will participate in project planning, software evaluation, and resource description initiatives; develop and modify workflows for library cataloging and processing as needed; support the improvement of accessibility to the library's subscription and other digital resource collections; perform holdings maintenance; and provide secondary and redundant support for the integrated library system hosted solution (currently Ex Libris Voyager) and as a resource for report generation and other ILS operations. This position also joins all library staff in support of public service and circulation operations at the Goldstein Library's main service point as needed/requested.

The successful candidate will have experience or formal training in resource description for multiple material types; some experience with or knowledge of library technical services processes; some knowledge of cataloging standards and practices; and the ability to supervise processing of physical library materials. The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service orientation, a willingness to work in a team atmosphere, and excellent organizational skills. Knowledge or interest in integrated library system operations a plus.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience or familiarity with cataloging, metadata, and related standards and practices; and with library and/or archival processes for handling materials
  • Proficiency with desktop computers and software. Experience using both MAC and PC platforms
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct job duties with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library services and ability to work flexibly and creatively in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library/Information Science or coursework and/or experience working in a library technical services environment
  • Background in visual arts, design, architecture, or liberal arts discipline
  • Experience or familiarity with cataloging with the Library of Congress Classification System and LC Subject Headings
  • Experience or familiarity with OCLC/MARC records and nationally accepted library cataloging standards, including AACR2 and Bibliographic Format Standards.
  • Experience or formal training with technical services modules (e.g. cataloging and acquisitions) of one or more integrated library systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of integrated library systems (experience with Voyager ILS preferred)
  • Experience cataloging art, art history, and design materials
  • Supervisory experience
