Communications Associate: This is an advanced, professional level work supporting the communication needs for Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources. This position is responsible for consulting with Libraries managers and staff to plan, coordinate, design, create and implement multiple forms of communications. This position reports directly to the director for Libraries System and works in tandem with the Communications Department.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.
Coordinates department’s multiple communication projects that support the department’s mission, goals, programs and services. Develops and maintains communications plans, schedules, monitors, tracks and reports on projects. Serves as the department’s communications consultant in strategizing, designing and implementing communications plans, techniques, methods and campaigns. Consults with managers and staff to identify and develop positive storylines to promote department’s operations, programs and services through various communication mechanisms.
Develops, writes, prepares, reviews, edits and implements editorial content for department’s communications projects including: social media, online magazine, the intranet, bulletins, flyers, posters, brochures, speeches, etc. Design and digital produce department’s communications/marketing materials. Work using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint for developing editorial content and presentations as well as Adobe Creative Suites to design, layout, produce, illustrate and generate print-ready, web-ready and TV-ready files for communication/marketing materials. Create (design, print and assemble) brochures, flyers, posters, signs, banners and other print pieces.
Works closely with the county’s Communications Department on projects to ensure brand standards are maintained and opportunities for cross promotion are maximized. Attend Communications Department meetings as needed to ensure cross promotion and coordination with the entire enterprise.
Presents information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers/clients, managers and directors and other employees of the organization; makes recommendations for new and enhanced communication tools.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Relations, Mass Communications or related field. Significant related experience in Public Communications.
Job Competencies: Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects; ability to exercise considerable judgment in the application of journalistic principles and practices; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all customers. Must possess outstanding communication skills and techniques. Considerable knowledge in developing concepts, designing and producing digital material for multiple mediums (print, web, TV). Considerable experience creating print-ready documents using the Adobe Creative Suites. Must know the principles, practices and techniques of digital graphic design, layout and illustration.
