The University of North Florida, located in Jacksonville, Florida, invites applications for Dean of the Library.  The Dean of the Thomas G. Carpenter Library is the chief administrator of the university library and reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.  


The Dean of the University Library is a 12-month administrative faculty position with responsibility for the organization, administration, operation, and evaluation of library services, physical facilities, staff, collection, and budgets. This is a non-tenure track position with University Librarian rank.  The Dean, with faculty, staff and students, strives to meet the educational objectives of the University by playing an active role in developing the library’s collections and services and the growing area of digital collections and application of emergent technologies.  The Dean serves on the UNF Dean’s Council and works closely with other Florida public university library deans as well as representing the Library in the community and at the state and national level.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science (MLS or MLIS degree) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Five years of progressively responsible administrative experience in an academic library.
  • Strong background in managing library services with positions of increasing responsibility in library administration at the division head level or above in an academic institution that includes master-level programs.
  • Documented experience with technology appropriate to university libraries.
  • Demonstrable leadership and vision and the ability to work collegially with University faculty from all disciplines in an atmosphere of shared governance.
  • Demonstrable leadership and vision and the ability to work collegially with University students and staff. 
  • Significant experience with managing complex library budgets, library operations, and allocating resources strategically (i.e., significant administrative and fiscal management experience).
  • Strong leadership skills, including keen analytical and conceptual abilities and demonstrated ability to manage organizational change, inspire innovation, and delegate responsibility appropriately.
  • Demonstrable experience in strategic planning including the ability to articulate a clear vision and strategic direction for the library in the rapidly changing information and higher education environment.
  • Demonstrable record of participation in state and/or national library organizations.
  • Demonstrable commitment to community outreach and fundraising.
  • Professional experience with and interest in culturally diverse groups and learning styles.

Preference will be given to those who meet the required qualifications and also possess the following:

  • A Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree; note, having a completed PhD does not substitute for the requirement for an MLS or MLIS.
  • A record of research and scholarship in library-related issues.
  • Experience in an institution with doctoral programs.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

In conjunction with the University’s policy, this position requires a level II background check which includes fingerprinting. Based on the specifics of the actual job functions, the position may also require a credit check.

The holder of this position is designated as a “Responsible Employee” pursuant to their role under Title IX. Therefore, the incumbent must promptly report allegations of sexual misconduct, sexual violence, and child sexual abuse by or against any student, employee, contractor, or visitor to the University’s Title IX Administrator or any divisional Title IX Coordinator.
