GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs difficult professional work involving responsibility for the Public Services division and other major service center(s) in the Boca Raton Public Library (BRPL). Responsible for the effective administration, operation, budgeting, and evaluation of major service center(s) in the BRPL. Supervises professional personnel, paraprofessional personnel, and volunteers. Supervised by the Manager of Library Services.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provides strategic direction for the BRPL for public services, including daily library operations, safety, customer service, circulation and collection management, personnel training, and effective use of public and staff spaces, supplies and furnishings;
Maintains excellent relations with the Public by handling escalated customer complaints, customer feedback and customer suggestions; maintains excellent relations with the Recreation Services Department, City Departments, and BRPL stakeholders through regular communication, meetings and reporting;
Oversees the hiring, orientation, training, supervision, scheduling, professional development, and regular evaluation of all Public Services professional personnel, paraprofessional personnel; oversees the selection, orientation, training, supervision and scheduling of Public Services volunteer or intern personnel;
Plans, prepares and oversees the administration of the Public Services portion of the BRPL's yearly City budget; seeks grants in collaboration with City Departments to meet defined public service needs; proposes funding opportunities to BRPL Friends group as appropriate; manages public services grants or related funds received; manages library registers, deposits, and fines and fees revenues according to City policies;
Prepares, analyzes, and reports monthly statistics to the Library Manager; provides trend analysis to Library Manager, staff and stakeholders; uses statistics, assessment and survey information to improve operations and maximize library service effectiveness; assists with special projects and committees related to strategic goals;
Schedules, completes and reports assessments, surveys, and evaluations of Public Services operations to ensure that customer service, safety, facilities' usage, and training goals are being met; presents findings in meetings with staff, stakeholders, and in a variety of settings as required;
Researches, communicates and remains current on emerging and evolving public library trends in Public Services to provide vision, strategic direction, and administrative leadership; participates in professional organizations and attends regional, state and national conferences, workshops, committees and meetings;
Responsible for all staff training related to essential library operations, collections access, safety, and customer service, including enforcing the Library Rules of Conduct;
Develops and provides ongoing assessment of library policies and procedures related to Program Services, based on accessibility, privacy, and intellectual freedom principles, and according to laws guiding public libraries;
Supports all other aspects of library service, including programming, technology, maintenance, and library administration;
Enforces the Library's Rules of Conduct and serves as the Building Administrator in Charge; serves as the Manager of Library Services when required.
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of professional, paraprofessional, and/or clerical staff and volunteers.
Ability to research and analyze administrative library problems, and to make recommendations for their solution.
Ability to interpret library policies and objectives to community groups and the public.
Ability to maintain administrative and fiscal records, prepare reports, and collect and report statistics.
Extensive knowledge of professional library principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
Considerable knowledge of the relevant literature, trends, and developments in the field of library services.
Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
Advanced skill in the use of computers and software applications.
Ability to serve the public and interact with fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, co-workers, vendors, Recreation Services department and other City departments.
Ability to act as Library Manager as requested.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's Degree in library and/or information science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association required; minimum of five (5) years' experience working in public libraries and four (4) years supervisory experience.
Possession of a valid State of Florida driver's license with no more than six (6) points within the last (3) year period.
Essential employee during declared storm emergency.
Must be able to see, stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch, bend, and reach.
Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push a loaded book cart weighing up to 200 pounds.
Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust.
