GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs difficult professional work in a section in the public library; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Catalogs new books; attaches books that other libraries already have in the system;
Catalogs books, videos, AV material including books on tape, CDs, etc.;
Catalogs books for other libraries that do not have full time cataloger or computer programs for cataloging;
Helps clear up database as need arises;
Providing professional circulation, reference or other patron services; developing and updating collection; selecting materials; assisting patrons; researching reference sources; maintaining records; preparing reports.
Supervises, manages and performs circulation desk operations; answers questions and assists patrons in finding information and materials;
Registers patrons for library cards on computer and keeps information current;
Registers patrons to use computers and enforces policy; monitors public usage of computers and answers questions;
Answers reference questions in person or by telephone and conducts research as required;
Designs, coordinates, oversees, plans and presents a variety of educational and training programs for patrons, patron groups and library staff;
Plans and prepares the library web site; maintains current information regarding current and upcoming events; maintains webliographies for patron and staff use;
Reads and evaluates reviews; maintains and collects patrons opinions and requests to recommend materials for selection;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern library operation; thorough knowledge of reader interest levels; thorough knowledge of library reference, adult, children's and other library services; thorough knowledge of library system computer applications; thorough knowledge of library reference materials and research techniques; ability to maintain accurate records and statistics and complete accurate reports; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and associates; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school and some library experience.
