GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Provides administrative and professional assistance to the Library Director in the direction and supervision of the library. Work is performed under general supervision of the Library Director. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Providing professional administrative assistance to the Library Director including work on budget, personnel, policies, schedules and all activities of the library.
Supervises library staff
Manages library operations in the absence of the Director
Assists Director in implementing library’s long range plan
Keeps informed of developments and participates in activities of professional and community organizations
Attends meetings of Library Board, Friends of the Library
Assists with the formulation and administration of library goals, policies and procedures
Troubleshoots equipment problems
Manages special projects
Serves on interview team with the Director to select staff
Participates in budget development
Handles conflicts with employees and with patrons
Reads reviews and orders library materials and equipment
Handles building issues
Works at reference and circulation desk as needed
Performs other related duties as required
May make decisions relative to: library operations, programming, customer and vendor inquiries, collection development, and personnel selection and management
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Professional knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques; professional knowledge of the library circulation functions; professional knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate personnel; skill in the use of library equipment, materials and resources; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school and extensive library experience, including extensive supervisory experience.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of Florida.
