The FIU Libraries seek a knowledgeable, innovative, collaborative individual for the position of Associate Dean for Technical Services, responsible for leading the Technical Services Departments consisting of Cataloging, Acquisitions, Serials, and Electronic Resources. As part of the Administrative Team, the AD for Technical Services participates actively in strategic conversations spanning areas of library operations, thinking broadly and collaboratively to produce initiatives that support student learning, faculty teaching, and research; increase operational effectiveness; and achieve alignment with University goals and objectives. This administrator provides vision and leadership for a comprehensive collections and research support strategy, oversees management of the library’s strategic resource budgeting process, and the development, management, and preservation of the Libraries’ collections. This position guides the development and application of analytical methods to assess and describe trends in collections expenditures and use. This position provides strategic leadership and management for the planning, design, implementation, and operation of technical services and systems, including the Libraries’ cloud-based online catalog and its component parts. Further, this position plans, develops, and assesses cataloging & metadata operations, procedures, services, and activities in all formats, with a particular focus on streamlining workflows between Acquisitions, Serials, Electronic Resources and Cataloging. Working with the Digital Collection Center to optimize discovery and data syndication across search platforms, as well as coordination of staff expertise presents significant opportunities for collaboration. The AD for Technical Services represents the Libraries’ collection interests in state, regional, and national collaboratives, including the Florida Academic Library Services Cooperative, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and HathiTrust.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leads the Technical Services Departments consisting of Cataloging, Acquisitions, Serials, and Electronic Resources.
  • Includes direct supervision of 3 FTE faculty librarians (9 total librarians) and hierarchical supervision of 16 FTE staff.
  • Allocates and monitors the materials resource budget.
  • Leads collection development efforts of the FIU Libraries, including coordination of issues and policies across all formats in consultation with appropriate departments and personnel.
  • Chairs the FIU Libraries’ Collection Advisory Committee to discuss collection activities, review product proposals, and draft policies.
  • Participates in collaborative collection discussions with local, state, and national efforts including CSUL Collection Planning Committee, Florida State Library, Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, and the Center for Research Libraries.
  • As an Associate Dean, participates in meetings and activities to determine the strategic direction of the library, achieve annual goals, and enhance daily operations
  • Assumes other responsibilities and duties as requested by the Dean of Libraries.
  • Leads acquisitions & cataloging activities including purchasing, licensing, and facilitating access to licensed content, with attention to streamlining workflows and eliminating duplication of effort.
  • Assists in developing effective reports and messaging for other library and university administrators to understand the library’s materials budget needs.

Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development

  • Participates in continuing education, conference, workshops, seminars, or other activities that enhance professional knowledge.
  • Contributes to the profession through active participation in professional associations, research, or other scholarly activities.
  • Serves the library and institution through participation in meetings and committee work.
  • Attends and participates in library meetings, including Library Assembly, Administration Team, and Direct Reports.


Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLIS
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library services and an understanding of information seeking behaviors in an academic research environment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills, including the ability to effectively impart knowledge and skills
  • Minimum five years of experience managing multi-million dollar resource budgets.
