Description:

This position is located in the Bureau of Braille and Talking Books Library within the Division of Blind Services. The incumbent will maintain the local Keystone Systems (KLAS) catalog using information received by email from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) and other sources. This position requires consistent, detailed attention to cataloging along with heavy data entry. This position involves working independently on long term tasks with strict parameters, and updating the supervisor regularly. The incumbent will assist the librarian supervisor as needed with general production department projects or projects related to the strategic plan. Other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

 

  • Add series codes and sequence numbers to individual book records using the information in monthly MARC record NLS update emails.  
  • Add new subject headings or merge existing ones in the catalog.
  • Extract periodic usage reports of local books produced in order to meet patron demand.
  • Copy Allotment twice monthly of books received from NLS, with assistance of the bestseller list and established patron preferences.
  • Assist as needed in entering new book information received weekly from NLS.
  • Assist the librarian supervisor as needed in reviewing Florida award winning books for recording.
  • Create original catalog records yearly for local books selected for recording.
  • Update work order and unrated books spreadsheets monthly.
  • Assist with yearly projects of librarian supervisor related to the strategic plan, such as creating Excel sheets with data on patron magazine subscriptions.

 

 


Education:

A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in library science from a library school program accredited by the American Library Association and one year of professional library experience.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, policies, and procedures of library services and programs.
  • Knowledge of a major area of librarianship.
  • Knowledge of standard and specialized research tools.
  • Ability to catalog and classify library materials.
  • Ability to determine resource needs and to review, evaluate and process requests for information.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
