The Charlotte Edwards Maguire Medical Library supports the medical curriculum and research objectives of Florida State University and the College of Medicine through a fully digital collection and librarians with training and expertise to meet the needs of clinical medicine and the health sciences. The medical library empowers our FSU community to discover new information, advance knowledge, and strengthen research at FSU with an emphasis on elder, rural, minority, underprivileged, and underserved populations.
The Information Services Librarian is a full-time, non-tenure track, faculty medical librarian position within the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Medical Library in Tallahassee, Florida. The successful candidate hired for this position will support clients in all of the academic programs of the FSU College of Medicine, including medical education (MD), physician assistant training (PA), biomedical sciences (PhD), bridge to clinical medicine (MS), and interdisciplinary medical sciences (BS). The successful candidate will operate as part of a medical library team, and will employ the library’s values of collegiality, trust, recognition, diversity, inclusion, critical thinking and healthy discussion, engagement, empowerment, and innovation at every opportunity.
This position is an entry-level position to the academic medical librarian profession, and will be filled at the Assistant University Librarian non-tenure faculty rank with opportunities for professional development and potential for faculty rank promotion.
The Information Services Librarian reports to the Director of the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Medical Library and creates strategies for meeting the information needs of students, residents, researchers, faculty, and staff of the Florida State University College of Medicine. As an Assistant University Librarian and faculty medical librarian, the successful candidate for this position will collaborate with teaching faculty in College of Medicine academic programs to identify needs and develop solutions to curriculum educational performance objectives. The librarian is expected to work closely with library faculty teammates and library operations team members to determine effective and efficient solutions to meet the needs of library clients from all levels of higher education, from undergraduate to full professor and practicing physician.
Typical responsibilities associated with this position include a wide variety of information services, including library instruction, orientations, curriculum support, reference and research methods consultations, actively participating as part of a research team, and management-level oversight of the front desk activities and the operations team members. Responsibilities may also include assisting with updates to the library’s catalogue and the medical library’s website, including LibGuides and Frequently Asked Questions, in coordination with the operations team.
This position has supervisory responsibility of 1 full-time USPS position. The reporting USPS position supervises 1-2 part-time/graduate assistants that, together, make up the library operations team.
The faculty medical librarian role enjoys the ability to identify self-directed initiatives and participate in collaborative functions with other team members, with commitment to the mission of the College of Medicine and Values for FSU Libraries (https://www.lib.fsu.edu/values). Based on needs of the library and the abilities of the candidate, other specific duties and areas of responsibility may be assigned or adjusted in coordination with and at the discretion of the director of the medical library.
This is a Faculty position.
Master's degree or higher in library or information science from an ALA accredited program.
Experience developing and providing instruction.
Experience using health science databases or other data and research tools.
Experience working with library operations systems (e.g., Aleph, interlibrary loan, Docline, OCLC, etc.)
Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) credentials, Provisional rank or higher.
Documented success working in teams.
Work experience in higher education and/or an academic library, especially a medical or health sciences library.
Experience working with electronic library resources, including e-books, e-journals, and databases.
Experience in creating and/or editing online content for professional or educational purposes.
Evidence of project, priority, and time management skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Evidence of intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn quickly and succeed in a mission-driven environment.
