Description:

Provides library services to children and young adults; including reference, reader’s advisory, programming, community activities, and collection development; promotes and publicizes the youth services programs in the community. Performs a wide variety of general library work in technical and/or public services to assist patrons with daily operational needs of the Library, such as processing, circulation and shelving library materials; performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Book selection, collection development, children and youth program planning, and reader’s advisory
  • Prepare library for opening and/or closing
  • Check materials in and out using online circulation system
  • Issue new library cards and update patron records
  • Receive and resolve complaints or refer public to the Library Director
  • Collect and record fees and fines
  • Process new library materials
  • Create marketing materials
  • Assist patrons with general information questions and locating materials
  • Assist patrons with using public computers and wireless network
  • Assist patrons with downloading electronic books and magazines
  • All duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Education:

Bachelor Degree with three years' experience working at a municipal or county library.

(A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of children’s literature, story telling, children’s programming and activities
  • Knowledge of event planning
  • Knowledge of municipal library practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of alpha and Dewey decimal systems
  • Knowledge of general computer operation and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to assist patrons re reference, recommendations, etc.
  • Ability to deal with the general public with diplomacy and tact
  • Ability to work flexible schedule when needed
