NATURE OF JOB

 

 


Supervises activities and staff of the Local History and Genealogy Services Department; assists patrons in the use of department resources; selects, evaluates, and manages print and non-print information resources. Reports to the Library Director and is a member of the Northwest Regional Library System management team.


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Organizes activities of Local History and Genealogy Services Department to maintain operational efficiency. Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow.

  • Assists patrons with local history and genealogy research in person, by phone and through email.

  • Analyzes documents and ephemera such as government records, family histories, photographs, maps and letters to determine historical value.

  • Examines donated materials and selects those to be used in the collection.

  • Obtains, develops, and organizes new collections.

  • Assembles historical data by compiling news clippings, photographs, and miscellaneous published and unpublished materials.

  • Participates in the cataloging and safekeeping of valuable materials and coordinates disposition of materials not meeting selection criteria.

  • Prepares document descriptions and reference aids for use of archives, such as accession lists, indexes, guides, bibliographies, abstracts, and microfilmed copies of documents.

  • Directs and participates in digitization of photographs and other library materials for inclusion in the catalog and on the library website.

  • Assists government agencies, scholars, journalists, and others conducting research by supplying available materials and information.

  • Acts as library liaison to the local genealogical and historical societies.

  • Attends historically important community events and meets with members of the public, occasionally outside the library, to secure photographs and other potential collections.

  • Seeks out and applies for grants and community funding.

  • Stays abreast of current trends in archives, public libraries, and genealogy.

  • Arranges tours of Local History Room and collections as requested; conducts outreach presentations in the community.

  • Cleans, catalogs, labels, and stores specimens and relics.

  • Installs and arranges exhibits and displays to promote the collection.

  • Organizes genealogy and local history collections. Sorts books, publications, and other items according to classification code and returns them to shelves.

  • Selects, reviews and orders books, periodicals and other materials for the local history and genealogy collections.

  • Examines trade publications and materials and consults with others to select materials.

  • Examines and selects materials to be discarded, repaired, or replaced.

  • Participates in the preparation of budgets for collection development.

  • Compiles bibliographies and develops library user guides.

  • Provides training classes for the public and staff on the use of resources available online and within the Local History & Genealogy Department.

  • Directly supervises employees and volunteers of Genealogy and Local History Services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with County policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Regular reliable full time attendance as scheduled

Education:

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Master's degree (M. S.) in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.

  • Three to five years related experience and/or training.

  • Archival management experience or training preferred.

  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language

  • Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public

     

    LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

    Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, library staff, and the general public.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to type; experience with word processing; knowledge of basic computer operations, including use of mouse and creation of files and folders.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    This is primarily office work requiring limited physical effort.  This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e. seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions.  This position may require lifting up to 50 lbs. 

     

    Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment and is nearly absent from disagreeable elements (e.g., irate customer, extreme noise, heat, odors, heights and/or dust). ----- or Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust). 

     

    This position may require moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
