Description:
The County of Volusia is seeking two Librarian I/II for the Ormond & Daytona Beach Regional Libraries. This positions will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of circulation desk functions; trains, directs, supervises and evaluates staff, student workers and volunteers; keeps track of fines and fees, sets register drawers, prepares deposits; prepares and submits statistical reports as scheduled or assigned.

Librarian I
Entry level professional work in a specialized area of the library. Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will have least one (1) year of experience working in the Circulation Department of a medium to large public library.


Librarian II:
Professional level work furnishing information on library activities, facilities, rules and services, as well as, assisting in the arrangement of collections. Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will have least two (2) years of experience working in the Circulation Department of a medium to large public library, and be able to cross train in other department as needed.

NOTE: Night and weekend hours required. 
 
 
 
Illustrative Duties:     
 
AAll Levels
  • Works at a consolidated public service desk.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Librarian I
  • Provides front-line, telephone, and/or electronic reference service to citizens and visitors.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules and services.
  • Assists in the processing and arrangement of collections.
  • Explains the use of print and electronic reference sources.
  • Provides reader's advisory services to children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files, print and media collections, databases, the Internet, etc.
  • Provides basic assistance to citizens and visitors on general applications of computer use.
  • Assists with the development, ordering, and maintenance of library collections within established policy guidelines.
  • Supports programs to achieve library objectives by assisting other librarians in the planning, promotion, and execution of programs for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Promotes print and computer literacy for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Assists other librarians with outreach or other library promotional activities for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • May train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of paraprofessional employees and/or volunteers.
  • May perform independent work related to the overall operation of a community branch.
  • To be cross-trained in all areas of assignment as needed.
  • Uses the integrated library system, online databases, the Internet, electronic catalog, and may assist with maintenance of library equipment, software, or hardware.
  • May be responsible for daily and/or weekly money deposits.
  • May attend workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences as required.
  • Performs work of all lower level library classifications and related work as required.

Librarian II
  • Performs front-line, telephone, and/or electronic reference service to citizens and visitors.

  • Assists in the arrangement of collections.
  • Markets the collection and the other library supported activities through creative, visually appealing displays.
  • Explains the use of print and electronic reference sources.
  • Creates and displays pathfinders or other print bibliographic instructional tools.
  • Provides reader's advisory services to children, teens, and/or adults.
    Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files, print & media collections, databases, the Internet, etc.
  • Provides basic assistance to the public on general applications of computer use.
  • Participates with the development, ordering, and maintenance of library collections within established policy guidelines.
  • Plans, promotes, and executes programs for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Promotes print and computer literacy for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Plans and attends outreach or other library promotional activities for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • May train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of paraprofessional employees and/or volunteers.
  • May perform independent work related to the overall operation of a community branch.
  • May perform original cataloging and supervise other processing duties at the library support center such as maintenance of the government documents database, the periodicals modules, the online library catalog, etc.
  • To be cross-trained in all areas for assignment as needed.
  • Uses online databases, the Internet, integrated library systems, and may assist Library IT with maintenance of library equipment, software, or hardware.
  • May be responsible for daily and/or weekly money deposits.
  • May attend workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences as required.
  • May be required to participate in the "Ask a Librarian" program.
  • Performs work of all lower level library classifications and related work as required.

Education:
Minimum Requirements:     
 
Librarian I - Pay Range: $43,037 - $71,192

Master's Degree in Library Science from ALA accredited program. The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have at least one (1) year of experience working in the Circulation Department of a medium to large public library.

*Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.

Librarian II - Pay Range: $45,620 - $75,466

Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program plus (1) year professional library experience after the MLS. The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have at least two (2) years of experience working in the Circulation Department of a medium to large public library, and be able to cross train in other department as needed.

*Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.

  • Ability to supervise and evaluate subordinate employees and/or volunteers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

Librarian II
  • Knowledge of complex library functions and operations.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Skill in operating integrated library systems and other relevant computer operations (ie: the Internet, Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, etc).
  • Ability to plan, promote, and execute age appropriate library programs and outreach activities.
  • Ability to offer age appropriate reader's advisory services.
  • Ability to prepare and present reports.
  • Ability to keep abreast of current trends in library science.
  • Ability to perform basic to moderate mathematical computations including cash-handling techniques. 
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate subordinate employees and/or volunteers.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and use judgment on routine and non-routine matters.
  • Ability to employ appropriate policies and procedures and to explain them to others.

ADA REQUIREMENTS: 
Physical Demands: Medium, repetitive work. Ability to see, hear and listen, talk; detailed finger dexterity (including grasping and small tool manipulation), may require visually acuity for fine print. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle. Ability to lift and push 25+ pounds, carry, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, stretch, twist, and climb. Ability to stand for long periods of time.  

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, and journals; memos, policies, safety instructions, etc. Ability to speak clearly and concisely. Ability to relate information, data, and detail verbally and in writing. Ability to perform basic mathematical and monetary functions.
