The ideal candidate is a creative strategist who will promote the mission of the organization and provide leadership to the staff and its 4-county (Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade) library members. SEFLIN, a non-profit multi-type library cooperative comprised of 39 Southeast Florida libraries, is dedicated to sharing resources and supporting cooperation between its member libraries. Located in Boca Raton, FL, it is one of five multi-type library cooperatives in Florida. SEFLIN offers continuing education—including two major annual conferences—resource sharing, library advocacy tools, consulting services, vendor discounts, and more to member libraries. Governed by a 13-member Board, SEFLIN has a staff of 5FTE and an annual budget of approximately $1M. Funding sources include Federal and State grants and membership fees.

SEFLIN’s Executive Director must be a visionary with innovative thought and demonstrated leadership experience in a non-profit library or other public organization. The Executive Director must demonstrate success in working with a governing board, fostering a member-focused organization with a reputation for providing strong outreach services, high-level support for innovative technologies, and cooperative purchase of resources. The Cooperative consists of K-12 school, public, academic, institutional, corporate, health sciences and special libraries .

The Executive Director provides leadership to the membership and staff of SEFLIN, and specifically

  • Promotes and collaborates SEFLIN’s mission within the region, state and MLCs;
  • Leads regional strategic planning and implementation for innovative cooperative services;
  • Advises, recommends, and formulates policies with the SEFLIN Board;
  • Obtains and administers State, Federal and other grant funding for activities to further SEFLIN’s mission;
  • Advocates for SEFLIN and the interests of SEFLIN members; and
  • Provides Human Resource support, promotes dignity and respect for all, encourages/challenges staff, and manages and mentors SEFLIN staff.



To the Board

  • Serves as an ex-officio member of the Board and Executive Committee, without a vote
  • Serves as Chief Executive Officer and official representative of the Board of Directors, responsible for contracts, finances, and SEFLIN programs
  • Proposes new initiatives to the Board for consideration
  • Presents an operations report for SEFLIN at each meeting of the Directors and an Annual Operations Report at the Annual Meeting
  • Oversees a full and accurate account of SEFLIN funds, providing the Directors with regular financial reports, including one report on the annual audit
  • Facilitates the development and adoption of strategic plans by the Board
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Board President, the Board of Directors, or the Executive Committee

To the Membership

  • Identifies, develops, and delivers high quality, innovative, and cost-effective member services that address SEFLIN’s strategic priorities
  • Implements short and long term strategic planning
  • Evaluates member services to ensure that they meet member library needs
  • Engages with members through personal, print, and electronic methods
  • Recruits and retains libraries for SEFLIN membership, and 
  • Guides legislative advocacy for causes and issues of importance to SEFLIN and the SEFLIN membership

To the Division of Library and Information Services

  • Submits State and Federal grant applications, and oversees grant project implementation
  •  Prepares midyear and final narrative and fiscal grant reports
  • Represents SEFLIN to the State Bureau of Library Development and others at the state level

General Administrative and Fiscal

  • Motivates and inspires staff and members with leadership and vision
  • Assumes primary responsibility for developing and implementing SEFLIN services, technology, and operations
  • Develops budgets and monitors expenditures ensuring sound fiscal management practices
  •  Administers personnel operations including recruitment, hiring, training and development, and performance evaluation
  • Assists with evaluation and survey of the membership

  • Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program
  • 5-7 years of experience, including 3 years of library or project management
  • Able to take into consideration the broad considerations of diverse communities and think in fiscally responsible ways that nurture all populations while creatively navigating new opportunities for growth
  • Demonstrated success in securing and managing grant funding
  • Successful track record in working with and reporting to a Board (preferred)
  • Mid or upper management experience in a multi-type library network or consortium (preferred)
  • Degree or experience in communications, marketing, advocacy or community engagement (preferred)

  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus among diverse groups
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the use of current and emerging information technologies
  • Demonstrates excellent communication, both with formal written and oral skills, while encouraging authentic, transparent and productive conversations and discussions
