Description:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepares and organizes book carts for sorting and shelving; arranges items in alphabetical and numerical order ensuring accurate placement; understands and applies the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Sorts, evaluates, or otherwise prepares library materials; monitors items for damage or defects; inspects each library item before placing on shelves.
  • Performs various morning opening tasks; replenishes all supplies stocked for Patron use, fills copy machine with printer paper, inspects various areas for trash or other debris, and ensures facility is ready for community use.
  • Assists staff in keeping work and public areas in order; monitors facilities during the day and may perform various tasks in the maintenance of library space.
  • Empties sort machine bins of books, periodicals, and audio/visual items; returns items to the appropriate shelf and area.
  • Checks daily delivered mail, magazines, and files; stamps, files, and delivers important items to the appropriate persons.
  • May check a variety of library materials in and out or perform other routine tasks, such as responding to questions from patrons.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Education:

Education and Experience: High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate AND no previous experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. 

Minimum Qualifications: Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment: A valid State driver's license is required. This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides: Fax, copier, phone, personal computer, and other equipment as assigned. 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Knowledge of –

  • Daily library routines and shelving techniques and practices.
  • Dewey Decimal system.
  • General library policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods.
  • Customer service principles.

Skill in –

  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Accurately filing and shelving library materials both alphabetically and numerically.
  • Responding and engaging with library patrons and the community. Lifting and transporting various heavy loads of library materials and pushing book carts.
  • Operating a computer and related software and various library systems.
  • Conflict resolution.
