Job Function:  

The Director of the Library is responsible for providing library information materials and services for the community of Jacksonville University using available resources, facilities, and personnel efficiently through policies and procedures jointly agreed upon by professional librarians and other appropriate University administration. The Director of the Library supports the mission of the university through the overall planning, management, and operation of the Swisher Library and its relationship to the rest of campus, particularly to academic affairs.

Description of Essential Job Functions: 

- Oversees all library operations through planning, assessing, and providing appropriate services, resources, goals and policies to achieve strategic priorities.

- Create an environment that facilitates scholarly activity with an understanding of innovative and traditional methods of information dissemination.

- Develop and deliver a 21st century information sharing and collaboration strategy for Jacksonville University that transforms library services.

- Contribute substantively to the intellectual life of the college by planning, developing, coordinating, sharing, collaborating with, initiating, and evaluating resources and services to fulfill and support the educational mission of the university.

- Develop outreach, engagement opportunities, key metrics, and processes to ensure and support creative and effective use of library services and technologies to serve the needs of students and academic departments.

- Directs library operations, manages, supervises, and evaluates library faculty and staff

- Consults with faculty to determine library resources and service needs of academic programs and department.

- Develops short- and long-term plans for the library and related goals and objectives consistent with the University’s and library’s mission.

- Prepare, monitor, and report on the annual budget for the Library, including operating budget, endowed funds, and gifts.

- Assesses the quality and effectiveness of library services and programs. 

- Prepare regular statistical reports for University administration.

- Maintains productive library vendor relationships and negotiates vendor contracts to optimize library resources.

- Oversee the day-to-day management of the Library, including creating, reviewing, and updating library polices.

- Analyze information on the effectiveness and efficiency of the Library and recommends operating policies and procedures.

- Serve as the designee for the University on Library matters such as relevant professional, state and regional accrediting and regulatory agencies.

- Participate in curriculum committees and ensure representation of the Library on other committee and working groups.

- Evaluates and makes appropriate recommendations regarding the care and the condition of the library building and its facilities.

- Other duties as required.

Work Conditions: 

- Primarily indoor working environment

- Standard office hours with the flexibility of staying later or arriving earlier when necessary

- Occasional travel for library conferences

 

Physical Requirements: 

- Must be able to operate a computer keyboard or other office machines

- Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach.

Education:

Prerequisites Required for Position:

1. Minimum Education Requirement: Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association

2. Minimum Work Experience:  Six years of progressively responsible library experience in an academic setting

3. Preferred Qualifications: Additional graduate training and education in such areas as library and information science, higher education, or computer science culminating in a second master’s degree or other appropriate advanced degree or have special skills and knowledge in an area represented at JU through its courses and programs.
