Description:

Library Systems & Services seeks a full-time Youth Services Librarian for the Hart Memorial Library of the Osceola Library System, located in beautiful historic downtown Kissimmee and a stone’s throw from Walt Disney World, Space Coast beaches and Orlando. 

The ideal candidate is outgoing, energetic and confident. They will design and carry out engaging, creative and innovative programs and services for our young patrons and their parents, teachers, and caregivers. The Youth Services Librarian will deliver regular storytimes, programs for elementary and middle school students, and events and classes for teens. The Youth Services Librarian will join with schools, organizations, and partner agencies to engage in outreach programs and market Library events to the public, helping to create life-long Library patrons.  The successful candidate has a strong knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, varied interests in science, arts, technology and the humanities, a love of reading and learning to share with children and their families, and a commitment to enhancing literacy skills of all kinds.

Position Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating and delivering engaging and innovative events and classes for our young patrons, such as storytime, music and movement, STEAM programs, book clubs, artistic expression, coding, and more.
  • Delivering live or virtual programming using technology and online platforms in addition to traditional in-person programs.
  • Assisting children, parents and caregivers to find reading and research materials and provide instruction in the use of library services.
  • Collaborating with and contributing to the youth team by supporting system-wide events, attending meetings and providing leadership and organizational structure and support. 
  • Providing outreach and presentations to schools and community organizations.
  • Assisting in developing Library collections online and in print from early literacy through high school. 
  • Developing and supporting a successful Summer Learning program.
  • Discovering and participating in grants, community partnerships and innovative service opportunities.
  • Participating in reference, circulation and branch supervision as needed. 
  • Preparing and maintaining age-appropriate content for the Library’s online presence.

Education:

Position Requirements:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited program
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering and developing youth programming for a variety of ages
  • Excellent presentation skills, including on camera, in the Library, and out in the community
  • Creative problem-solver, confident professional, and enthusiastic team player with commitment to superior customer service.
  • Excellent technology skills, including familiarity with web-based technologies, electronic resources and devices and STEAM concepts in education or library programming 
  • Self-starting/self-motivated, requiring little supervision
  • Bilingual - Ability to speak, read and/or write in Spanish a plus

 

Physical Requirements:  

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
