This individual is smart, strategic and innovative with experience in public library service delivery,
project management, operational improvement and change management. The successful
candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to blend traditional and leading-edge library
services in an environment of continuous improvement while motivating staff working at multiple
sites around the county.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Directly supervising, coaching, evaluating and mentoring branch managers.
• Resolving complex customer issues, ensuring consistent operations practices between
locations, and overseeing the performance and development of frontline staff.
• Serving as an organizational leader, with a focus on operational improvement and change
management as well as serving as a large-scale project manager.
• Working closely with other senior staff to develop initiatives and strategies to enhance the
service priorities and goals for the library and the county.
• Explaining and administering library policies and procedures.
• Actively seeking and participating in professional development opportunities and staying
abreast of emerging technology and trends.
• Communicating and working effectively and tactfully with co-workers, sharing information
and working cohesively as a team.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSING
• Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in
Library or Information Science from a graduate library school program accredited by the
American Library Association and three years of progressively responsible experience as a
professional librarian managing a public library system or a department or division of a main
• Prefer a master’s degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate library school
program accredited by the American Library Association.
• Prefer at least five years related library experience.
• Prefer at least four years supervisory experience.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is required.
• Demonstrated leadership or management experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and techniques of library science and
public library administration and management.
• Knowledge of a variety of interests of patrons of different ages and backgrounds.
• Knowledge of library budgeting and related financial management practices.
• Ability to plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the work of professional and clerical
• Ability to become proficient with existing technology systems, software and computer
equipment used by the library system, adapt to new technology developments and
changes, and learn teaching skills to assist patrons with technology.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Spanish speaking is a plus.
• Ability to relate positively to a diverse population, including children, teens, seniors and
speakers of languages other than English.
• Ability to bend, stretch, sit and stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 35 lbs.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment.
• The County may require employees to make either a temporary, or long-term, permanent
transfer to another library location to accommodate the organization's business needs.
• This position requires 80 Hours bi-weekly; hours and days will vary to include evenings,
Saturdays and some Sundays.
